Sunbury Manor strike gold in
P&G Surrey School Games
The P&G Surrey School Games 2011 has now officially kicked off with Sunbury Manor taking gold in the U16 Girls Football County Final.
Sunbury Manor came out on top in the six-team county final tournament, having already one their school sport partnership area tournament to reach the county final.
Some fantastic defensive performances saw Sunbury Manor concede just one goal in five matches and a decisive 2-0 victory against Rosebery School was enough to see them lift the trophy.
The P&G Surrey School Games is taking place as part of 100 Days of Sport, which commenced on 15 March (500 day countdown to the Olympics) and will last until 23 June 2011.
So far ten School Games finals have been held with a further 20 to be held between now and 23 June. Highlights still to look forward to include athletics, rugby and mountain biking and there will be also a motorsport final, with eight technology colleges competing to build and race a formula 24 car at Dunsfold Park in May.
Paul Ainslie, Surrey County Council’s School Games Coordinator said: “The P&G Surrey School Games marks the pinnacle of school sport in the county with many of the events providing the opportunity to then go on to compete at a regional or national level if successful.
With the Olympics just around the corner, the Surrey County Council 2012 Team is working hard to realise the legacy promise of inspiring young people through the power of sport. The P&G Surrey School Games is a new initiative with 3,000 children expected to take part this year.
A huge amount of credit must go to our partners particularly the School Sport Partnership Network and sport organisers such as Surrey Cricket who are helping to make the Games such a great success and not forgetting the generous support from our sponsors Procter & Gamble.”
