Protecting the environment

Protecting the biodiversity of our environment for future generations was a top priority for all those involved in organising the cycling events.

Surrey has many beautiful areas which are currently protected and we ensured their special status was reflected in our planning for the Olympic events. Natural England in partnership with the National Trust, Surrey County Council and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) worked to take the necessary actions to comply with the UK Habitats Regulations and Wildlife and Countryside Act (as amended). Together we determined the scope of a Habitats Regulations Assessment and devised an appropriate spectator management plan.
