Biography

Lauren Smith is following her sister’s footsteps in being a successful synchronised swimmer. Initially starting the sport at the age of 11, Lauren has since made a huge name for herself in national and international competitions.

In 2006 Lauren was selected as a reserve for the duet team at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. There her fellow team-mates and Surrey residents Jenna Randall and Olivia Alison won Silver. Four years later Lauren competed against Jenna at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in the solo routine where she represented Scotland (due to having Scottish relatives). While her team-mate Jenna took Silver in Delhi, Lauren came behind her to take the Bronze medal position.

In addition to synchronised swimming, Lauren enjoys football, swimming and hockey. Lauren is focussed on success at the London 2012 games and takes part in tough training sessions. Speaking of her training sessions Lauren said “Other swimmers do roughly 42 hours a week training, we tend to do more than that and sometimes train for 10 hours a day with one hour break”.

Looking ahead to London 2012 Lauren said “Seeing all the countries competing together is really enjoyable to see at big competitions and will be great at London 2012. Doing a good swim and seeing that your coach is really happy is quite motivating, and of course potentially winning medals keeps me going”.
