The National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy – ‘Olympic star of the week’

At NCYPE any student who has excelled that week in regard to any of the Olympic and Paralympic values receives an Olympic style medal and certificate which is presented in a whole school assembly. Their achievement and value is shared with everyone at the assembly and also on their intranet for everyone within the organisation to see.

NCYPE also has a display board on all values and each week their Olympic star student is displayed.  The school has found that a lot of students have really embraced this and are putting in that extra effort in hope of achieving the award at the end of the week.

Walton Leigh – The Inclusive Sports Club

On 13th January a new ‘Olympic Inclusive Sports Club’ was launched at Walton Leigh School, having been developed in partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council. The club is open to all children and young people in the community with a disability. The launch event was attended by a number of VIP’s and was officially opened by the Mayor of Elmbridge followed by a Judo session led by Adrian Pearman.

The club has recently been awarded the Inspiremark, which is given to exceptional projects that are inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games.  Athletes will be given the opportunity to select an Olympic sport and will then receive a block of training in that sport by a qualified coach.

Walton Leigh - Shine a Light

Students at Walton Leigh can be nominated for citizenship awards for living the Olympic and Paralympic values which fit well with the school’s emphasis on a value led education. These awards are celebrated in the school with a display board showing the values and photos, as well as a special mention in assembly.

Shine a light on ‘Courage’

A recent example is 15 year old Joshua, who has severe learning difficulties and often finds new situations difficult. Participants of the Inclusive Sports Club have been coached in the Olympic and Paralympic sport of Judo, Joshua initially found it awkward to join in with the sessions. However Joshua showed the courage to face his anxieties and learn something new.  By the last session, Joshua was able to join in with all of the activities and participated in a Judo demonstration.  Remarkably, he was volunteering to demonstrate techniques in front of a large group of spectators that included the Mayor of Elmbridge, demonstrating how much Joshua's confidence and self-esteem has grown.
