Flag Exchange Project

It is difficult to think of an event where flags are used more than at an Olympic Games. They are paraded during opening and closing ceremonies and hoisted during every medal ceremony. Flags are powerful symbols of national and cultural identity.

About the project

Last year, inspired by the 2012 London Games, 54 Surrey schools designed and made flags that represented and celebrated their school communities.  At the same time those schools invited a partner school elsewhere in the world to do the same.

In all, a total of 88 beautiful and colourful flags were created and displayed together on site at the Celebrating Surrey festival in Loseley Park in June 2010. Since then, they have featured at 2012 Games events, such as the launch of '100 Days of Sport' at Surrey Sports Park.

Together the flags represent a strong sense of community and extend a Surrey 2012 welcome to the UK to other nations.

We now have an additional 25 schools participating along with their partner schools. Their creative flags will be showcased at high profile events linked to the 2012 Games such as the Go Surrey concert at the Albert Hall, the torch relay event at Stoke Park and the Olympic cycle race.  Look out for the flags at an event near you!
